The compound crossbow is one of only two ranged weapons that kill with something besides bullets.
The crossbow uses a primary weapon slot.

The crossbow is quite common and its reusable bolts makes for practically unlimited ammo (in theory).
You need to get a headshot to kill someone with it. Stealth is imperative as you need to be able to get within around 40 meters to hit someone at anything close to full damage.
You can only fire off a shot every 2.5 seconds, so it will be very difficult to take on someone who is aware of you. You should probably just not pick it up if you are alone. There is a relative abundance of better stealthy weapons around that you should be using instead.
